Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project

As part of the Pace Group’s mandate to handle the communications for VCCEP, an annual public meeting was held in November for the first three years of the project, to allow the VCCEP management team to explain the activities at the site and to allow the public to ask questions.

In April 2004, Pace Group and VCCEP staff took to the streets over three days around the site when pile driving began, to distribute information cards, refreshments and "earplugs" to local residents - as a way to remind them VCCEP understood their concerns. The campaign also attracted local and national media attention, and was followed up by a summertime team of three students stationed on the streets to stay in touch with local residents and distribute information.

As the work proceeded, it became clear that site conditions would prevent the pile driving from being completed on time. The area had been a dumping site for building materials for decades, presenting numerous hard-to-break obstacles, which extended the anticipated nine-month program to a full year. A special neighbourhood meeting was held partway through the pile driving program to provide an update on progress and allow neighbours to air concerns and request information.

Objectives:

Maintain open lines of communication between the project team and those who work and live nearby, and allow the VCCEP management team to reinforce the long term value of the expansion as a major asset.

Outcomes:

The public meetings allowed those most impacted by the construction to have their questions and concerns answered.A high level of interactive communication between local neighbours and VCCEP was also encouraged, to help keep the public informed about the project.
