Working with the Pace Group, BC Ferries has turned its three newest ships into a flotilla to promote the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and tourism destinations throughout British Columbia. Built in Flensburg, Germany, the three sister ships are the latest additions to the fleet, and with the help of the Pace Group, they’ll remind visitors and residents alike that a warm welcome is waiting for the world as we head towards 2010.
As the first vessel "Coastal Renaissance" neared completion in the fall of 2007, the Pace Group organized a celebratory barbeque for 2,500 guests and media at the Flensburg shipyard. It was attended by German government representatives and other dignitaries, and featured the Chiefs of the Four Host First Nations arriving by racing canoe, along with Hon David Emerson (Government of Canada), Hon Kevin Falcon (Province of BC), and David Hahn, President and CEO of BC Ferries.
After a ceremony in which a giant curtain was dropped to unveil the first of the "wrapped" ships, BC products and creations such as candied salmon, bison burgers on bannock buns, BC beer, and BC Ferries’ famous Clam Chowder were served at a shipyard barbeque.
The Pace Group was responsible for producing and delivering the celebration, and worked with BC Ferries to generate media attention in both Germany and Canada. The Pace Group also worked with Tourism BC, Tourism Vancouver and the Canadian Tourism Commission to ensure travel trade media and tour operators were invited to the festivities. The three vessels are now complete, and the third and final ship "Coastal Celebration" made a promotional stop in London, England.
Objectives:
To utilize the delivery of BC Ferries’ new Super-C class ferries as major promotions for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and BC’s tourism destinations.
Outcomes:
First event exposed 2,500 people to BC products and Canadian culture and received considerable media coverage in both Canada and Germany, with Global BC, CTV and the Times-Colonist newspaper sending reporters and camera crews to cover the launch over three consecutive days. The London event also received Canadian and British media attention.
